Liferay Development – Setup with Eclipse and Tomcat

February 4, 2013 2 Comments

To begin development  with Liferay Portal,

what should we have are -

1> Liferay Eclipse Development IDE
2> Liferay-plugins-sdk
3> liferay portal bundled with Tomcat

Though we have not given any version name for the above bundles, we have used Liferay 6.0 bundles for all of these.

The first thing we should create is a database for the Liferay Portal.

We have used MySql for this.

Be sure to create a database (We named it liferaydb ) .

Unzip all the above three files.

Go to  <<Liferay bundled Tomcat Directory>>\webapps\ROOT\WEB-INF\classes

Open the file portal-ext.properties.

Now change the property -

jdbc.default.url =  jdbc:mysql://localhost/liferaydb?useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=UTF-8&useFastDateParsing=false

jdbc.default.username=<<MySql User>>

jdbc.default.password=<<MySql Password>>

Now configuring through Eclipse -

Open Liferay-Eclipse IDE

Create new Liferay Project

A> Configure Liferay Plugins SDK

B> Configure Liferay Portal Runtime

Go to Ant tab of Liferay perspective in Eclipse.

Build the all target for the Liferay (Plugin) Project.

Go to Server Tab of of Liferay perspective in Eclipse.

Run the Server with       Sign.

It should be good to go with default Liferay Look-And-Feel.

On the next Post we will discuss the development of Liferay MVC portlet.
